VO Tour - Port Campbell

2nd January 1995

Departed Nelson for the much anticipated scenery at Port Campbell National Park. Again, the pack up was great, with all of the crew working well and co-operatively.

We stopped at Warnumbool on route, for some groceries and morning tea. Nothing of note, other than we got lost driving into the main centre of town and abused by another driver as a result. As you do.

Arrived at Port Campbell and booked into the caravan park at approximately 12:46. How's that for approxtmate! Immediately set up the tent and then went for our first walk about the village. The initial impression was favourable, as far as the physical scenery is concerned. However, our tent site was at the extreme end of the park and the busy end at that. We were the last site beside the main walkway out of the park to the beach and goldfish bowl syndrome set in. The park was very busy - not surprising for the time of the year - and there was a plethora of families and teenagers in residence. The former all wanted to run around and make as much noise as possible and the latter are mostly interested in fawning about, posturing and looking depressed whilst trying to impress and make contact with the opposite gender.

Generally, very different from a mountain campsite !

Added to this were the relatively poor amenities and over-crowding.

As a consequence, we intend to wake at sparrows, head out to look at the views and thus miss most of the tourists. After two nights here, we might proceed to Apollo Bay in the Otway National Park.

I purchased an interesting book about shipwrecks along this coast line.
