Canberra to Tambar Springs - Yass, Cowra, Canowindra, Molong, Wellington, Gulgong, Coolah 582kms
Rather than commencing with an anticipated sense of foreboding and regret, there was excitement and optimism among all of the travellers for the return home. When we had commenced this journey and throughout the planning, I had always felt this final day would see some or all of us feeling desperately sorry our time on the road had reached its conclusion. I had underestimated just how much Tambar Springs meant to all of us: each for different reasons.
Thanks given to my brother and sister-in-law for the job they had done in keeping our affairs In order, the road beckoned us forth at 8:15 am for the near 600 km leg to see us home.
Our last day on the road was windy, cold, raining in parts and generally unpleasant outside the confines of the car. A combination of tiredness and contemplation eventually descended on the crew and despite the excitement of home, they eventually all dozed, leaving me to drive long stretches in silence.
Lunch was a short stop in a favourite park at Wellington - the length of the stop determined by the cold and wet conditions.
The final 60kms from Coolah saw rising excitement until we crested the last hill into Tambar Springs. Here was home and there truly is no place like it. The next hour was a succession of greetings and
re-acquaintance, as we moved about our house and gardens, saying fond hellos to the familiar things of home.
Real meat was served for dinner and I sat for long hours in my comfortable lounge chair - remote controls at my finger tips - until the evening gave way to the morning of the following day. It was only then I could say our itinerary was completed and I could therefore retire to the exquisite comfort of bed and deep, restful sleep.
