Ferry at Morgan |
We enjoyed our two nights at Stansbury enough to know we want to come back but like most places on either coast of the Yorke Peninsular, not over Christmas or Easter when everywhere is madness.
We finally left the peninsular behind as we came past Port Arthur and bent around the top of St Vincent's Gulf for a short while until we turned east at Port Wakefield, a glorified town which is little more than a spot for a truck stop.
Its less than 30kms to our only stop of the day, Balaklava, chosen because Sue was hanging out for a Woolworths and the range of specialised foods it offers of strange diets. Unfortunately, her search on the Woolworths app had failed to detect that it reported a store at BalaClava in Victoria, a suburb of St Kilda some 812kms away. It was back to Foodland and then lunch in the van.
During the afternoon we passed through Auburn, in the Clare Valley and home to Taylors Wines, your correspondent's favourite group of reds. At first realisation we were only 7kms away and it was right ahead of us. Disappointingly, the next update had it 11kms away and behind us so we drove on.
The country side took on that familiar outback look until we reached Morgan, on the Murray River. After checking in, a walk revealed the history of the place, a bloody big dog at the pub ("don't worry, he's tied up") which changed our plans to walk to the lookout and a lovely space beside the river which celebrates the railway history of Morgan. In past days, a train line from Adelaide terminated in Morgan and paddle steamers from up river would deliver wool bales and other produce from farms to the railhead. This story is told in the museum and by the use of storyboards around the town.

In thelate afternoon, we took in the Murray and saw the fleet of riverboats moored down river - some very expensive machines there - and watched the vehicular ferry ply it's free trade.
Another short hop tomorrow into Victoria and NSW, staying at Gol Gol, just across from Mildura, allowing us to visit three states in one day.
