The Underground Hospital |
A second day in Mt Isa so Sue’s back can recuperate. Did little but watch the semis and Grand Final of Mastermind of Mastermind. Our only tourist activity was a visit to the Underground Hospital.
With the bombing of Darwin and the destruction of its hospital, concern was raised of the vulnerability of Mt Isa Hospital in the event of a Japanese air raid. The mine supervisor loaned equipment and miners their spare time to dig three tunnels into an adjacent hill. Completed quickly, the tunnels were never used for surgical procedures as there were never any air raids.
Our tour group was small and our guide - Roxana - was full of information. The museum suffers from being run by committee and volunteers, whose heart is big but curation skills small, so their is to much repetition and clutter. That said, it’s an interesting place and a unique slice of Mt Isa's history. An example of a tent house, used extensively for accommodation, is well presented with lots of personal touches.
