Map Of Tassie Tour - Day 1 to Wellington

After the best preparation of any Australian road trip we have made - and there have been a few - we still ended up getting away a lot later than planned. The upside is these first four days, we plan to only drive about 300km each day to get to out launch pad at Geelong. The downside is the heat we will face and the early we can drive in each day, all the better for people and machines.

The target was Wellington, south of Dubbo in the far central west of NSW. We tracked through Werris creek and the Gap Rd, which breaks the chain of hills and mountains which go north-northwest from Quirindi and end on the Breeza Plain. Waverly Road was closed, causing us to veer to the south and pick up the Coonabarabran Road and further west. Past Premer and some memories of our time in Tambar Springs and then south at the intersection known locally as the Crossroads and on to morning tea at the pleasant roadside rest area a few kms outside Coolah.

It was hot but the usual flies at this spot must have taken the day off.

South to the double turn onto and then off the Golden Highway after Leadville and then on to Gulgong

and a bumpy ride along the Goolma Rd to Wellington Caves C'van Park, where we took up our site under a tree.

It was hotter, just touching on 39C, so with the necessary done, we hung out at the pool with some folks
from Cowra who were have a few days off in Wellington.

Post pool, the air con in the van did its job, reducing the inside temperature to mid 20's. Ah the serenity! I couldn't keep my eyes open after dinner and slept well.

A good start.
